Open position: R & D Tech

Job Summary:  Research and Design Technicians assist engineers in developing, building, and/or testing prototypes or new products, processes or procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate prototype parts and any required tooling in the production of those parts.
  • Troubleshoots problems with equipment, devices, or products; determines causes of operational problems or failures.
  • Test products or processes for functionality or quality.
  • Suggest design changes to improve product performance and/or reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Convey essential design information to engineering.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Carries out all work within scheduled deadlines.
  • Responsible for occasional prototype assembly for shipment.
  • Ensure quality and consistency of work being produced.
  • Prepares, cleans, and maintains a safe workstation/environment by complying with procedures, rules/regulations, and safety guidelines.
  • Adheres to and supports 5S 1.
  • Adheres to and supports ISO 9001:2015 standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Mechanical ability and experience with mechanical assemblies.
  • Demonstrated ability to read blue prints, whether electronic or written, and interpret the specifications to complete jobs.
  • Ability to follow directions, written and verbal, and to make decisions and follow through.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of metal fabrication, including machining, forming and welding.
  • Must be competent in operating lathes, mills, drills and other machinery related to metal fabrication.
  • Ability to use various precision measuring instruments to check the accuracy of work and components.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn software.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written; for safety, performance and productivity, must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to qualify for and retain a fork lift license.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Physically active position requiring medium to heavy work with consistent lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Requires pushing and pulling up to 75 lbs.; requires exerting force.
  • Requires being able to stand and walk for long periods of time; 98% of the shift, including overtime, requires standing and/or walking.
  • To perform the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, squat, reach to, below or above shoulder level/overhead, lift, carry, push, pull and use hands and/or fingers to handle, grasp, manipulate, grip and use tools.
  • Essential duties and responsibilities are typically performed while standing or while intermittently sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, twisting, bending, crouching or stooping; requires reaching, pushing, pulling, and gripping/grasping.
  • Visual acuity and hand/eye coordination; requires the ability to see, talk, and hear.
  • Regular exposure to noise and vibration from pneumatic tools, moving machines, fumes, and occasionally airborne dust and particles.
  • Regular exposure to seasonal temperature changes in the work environment.
  • Requires steel/composite safety footwear that meets ANSI standards and safety eye protection at all times.
  • Hearing protection required in specified areas.
